I Woke Up Like This:The Curly Dames Guide to Easier Vintage Styling

The Curly Dames Guide to Easier Vintage Styling!

I will admit to YouTube being one of my guilty pleasures. I mean those vloggers' are awesome and have steered me to more than one awesome sale. A Vintage Vanity  helped me sew my first circle skirt, Lucy's Corsetry inspired me to make the jump for my first corset, and I could just keep going on and on. If you need the help , inspiration or just want to know what's happening in the vintage community this is one of the easiest and most easier accessible mediums in which to do it. One of the most popular topics have been hair tutorials. I don't know how many hours I've spent in the mirror with my tablet or laptop on the counter following step by step instructions from Cherry Dollface or some other popular you-tuber.

However when you're a curly girl things just don't look same; no matter how great these styles are and no matter how closely you follow the steps. You need different products and depending on the style you need to follow different steps and learn the cheats because its going to look different on your hair.  This hair of the day started with me following a vintage forties hair instructional booklet and it did not go well at all. The steps were not working for my hair and it was just all around bad. I really had a bad moment, though I worked it out in the end.
I get asked the question a lot as well as heard the subject breached on more than one occasion. Yes! you can do vintage styling with naturally curly hair or with natural hair. No their is need for heat styling you can keep your hair in its natural state if that is your choice (it is certainly mine). However what the majority of people don't tell you is that you do have to do a few things differently. Victory rolls on a person with straight hair that's been roller set will never look the same on someone that has curly hair no matter your curl pattern. So you can't sit down at your vanity with that expectation and read these six tips and your hair will come out even better than expected.

HOTD/ Review: Joie And The Battle Against The Frizz!

So I'm sure many of you can understand the ever going fight against frizzy hair. Lol noone probably knows this more than me, it's like my hair frizzes up just to piss me off. We all have our personal hard earned routines. Me included that consists of  wash twice a week , hair mask, serums, blah-blah-blah. But the second I touch a towel to my head and it doesn't matter what it's made of , whoosh! So I went to air drying which is a major gamble in and of itself. Which leaves us finally to this review/ hair of the day.  Finally I've got a good routine down that works for my hair , especially with the issues I have dealing with my Lupus. I'm also going to share my favorite products and top 5youtube vloggers that helped me with the journey.  Lastly we're going to try out my first blow-dry! I've always been a no heat doll but clearly that's not working with my frizz. So I have  the vintage model Conair diffuser dryer for curly hair to to try out.
So let's get started Dolls and dukes shall we.

I am a big  believer in natural and do it yourself products. A lot of people don't realize especially if you are a person like me with health issues. But everything you put your body soaks into your skin and blood stream, etc... And with all the unnecessary products that are in basically everything its something to think about. So whatever I don't make myself I make sure to use natural and organic companies.  Its important to say that I'm not a beautician, or expert! I am just Sharing a routine that has has finally worked for me.

   Pre shampoo Treatment

I know this kind of thing usually takes time so I tend to reserve it for weekend washes.  But if you have the time on a regular basis your hair will be the healthier for it.

MAYO PRE-POO TREATMENT:

2tbs olive oil
2tbs coconut oil
Spoonful of mayo
Egg white (1)

After mixing all together separate your hair into four sections. Concentrating on your ends distribute the throughout your hair and leave in  for about 10-30 minutes. Then wash, condition, and dry as usual.

Hot oil treatment

This can be done either as a conditioner or a pre-poo treatment. If you find that your hair gets weighed by oils in a negative way, then I suggest using this as an pre shampoo treatment.  You will get the benefits without the negative effects.

1tbs almond oil
1tbs olive oil
1 the coconut oil

Warm only enough to for it to soak into your hair. You do not want it to actually be hot or you can be seriously burned. Saturate from roots to ends and cover your hair up. Leave in for 5 - 10 min. and continue the rest of your routine.

AFTER SHAMPOO RINSE

Apple cider rinse

In a spray bottle take one part water , and one part apple cider vinegar. Shake up then spray your hair hair down liberally. Put on a shower cap and let sit for 5-10 minutes then rinse and condition as usual.

OUTFIT OF THE DAY: JEANS FOR THE SKIRT GIRL

If you're like me there is nothing like that amazing figure hugging wiggle skirt. Thrown in with a good well made belt in, a sleek set of garters. And its a quick road to an addiction. I'm sorry but with the down turn jeans have taken... they just can't compete with my skirts and dresses. Let's face it I can't remember the last time I saw a pair of jeans that went up at a length. Its mind boggling low-rise jeans and pants have lasted so long. Espically since they look good on NO ONE! But I've had to been the last Doll in the world to discover jeggings. Lol clearly us vintage Dolls can often times be out of touch with the modern world. But still this one was a big Duh moment for me.

In addition to low rise jeans creating a muffin top (whether you have one or not), with me being a pronounced hourglass figure I tend Togo for high waist everything and it is very hard to find. Also from pain I experience with my Lupus Jeans are just too heavy, and the numbero uno rule in fashion is that the clothing should not wear you!. But these were a true high-waist , a nice breathable cotton and baby soft. I loved them so much I went back on line and got some more colors.

Asos high waist Jeggings:

HOTD: When all else fails keep it classic

Hey Dolls & Dukes it's been awhile. I'm sad to feel that nip in the air summer will but over soon; but on the bright side it will soon be time to pull out the furs. So it's time for another hair of the day. I know We're all familiar with those days when nothing  you do to your hair turns out right. Even better than that your hair doesn't even look like it belongs to you. Well when this happens I trust in my good 'ol friend the snood.

You know the beauty about the snood is that it can hide a multitude of sins. You can dress it up, get creative and some pearls or skull studs. Dress it down , use it just for a bun cover. The point is they are alot more versatile then one may think. You can even tie your fav scarf as a snood. Basically they're just yet another hat for a vintage girl. Here a few of my favorite snood looks to give you some inspiration!

So get creative and have fun with those snoods dolls, and share your favorite looks with us to share on our Instagram. As always darlings

So lets get going... Someone shared this with me over Instagram and I too thought it was awesome so of course I had to bring it to you guys as well. It's just a quick makeup tutorial done by Kat Von Dee posted on Instagram showing you how how to do a bat wing cateye eyeliner, if that doesn't make you want to pull out those liquid eyeliners Dolls I don't know what will.
Happy practicing Darlings. Fashionably Speaking ...

I woke up like this: Distractions and Disruptions

Well Darlings we're back with another I.W.U.L.T. Since its Sunday I thought I'd share with you Dolls my church look. I remember going through the closet on Sundays when it was still getting comfortable with myself and how I was choosing to express it. Depending on the church you attend  you can be in front of  the closet for hours wanting to stay true to your style yet being sure to remain respectful. A lot of the times in my early awkward years I found myself going to the complete extreme and wearing a lot of frumpy too old clothing.

I thought this made me inconspicuous, and that I was appropriately dressed. Well it took awhile to be honest with myself. Cause the truth was I was neither of those things. I only drew more attention to myself being a young woman dressed so decrepitly old and that's not what we're going for. Because of this I was a big distraction and disruption. The exact thing I didn't want to be. This story I'm sharing isn't just about church or etc...that's just Just my example. Because the truth is I still go through this very thing all time. As long as you look like this and by that I mean outside of "societies norm" you'll be dealing with  this it if not from one person than another, then in some form or another. What you need to do is decide that, what you think of yourself matters more than any looks or opinions.

So just like everyone else has their wardrobe staples it's essential that us sassy Pinups have our's as well. Wardrobe staples are in a nutshell lifesavers. This is what you're going to reach for when you have to go to work, or a wedding (and don't want to upstage the bride). As well as the basis on which you'll use to expand you're wardrobe. So here is my list of a few staple items that every Doll needs.

The Pinup Dolls Lists of Wardrobe Staples:

> Highwaist Pencil skirt: you can never have too many of these, trust me dolls. What a good pencil skirt does for a woman's hips should be illeagal. I reccomend having as many colors as possible, I know we vintage girls tend to gravitate to black but trying out- let's say a hot pink skirt for ex. is a great way to break you out of your comfort zone.

> Full skirt: otherwise known as the midi skirt for our modern times; this looks great on everyone. It's Ultra slimming and they're great for all occasions.

> Shift dress: Another you can never have too many of. They are super cute and extremely verstile. I have a beloved small collection of late 50's-early 60's shift dresses and they have gotten me through many a emergency.

> Wiggle dress: There is never an occasion that doesn't call for a wiggle dress (but thats' just the type of Dame I am)

> Cardigan: If you don't know by now you will soon; a Cardigan is your bestfriend. They can completely change a outfit. And never fear if you can't find a vintage one. They're some amazing goth, rock, and reproduction companies that make amazing ones.

> Pearl necklace: Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than a set of pearls laying flush against glowing naked skin.

> Black MaryJanes: These have got to be one of my favorite pairs of shoes and they are versitile which give you countless Wardrobe  choices.

> White button-down blouse: This is a wardrobe classic you can litteally weara white button-down a different way every day of the week. Its that versitile. They go from day to night and even to evening wear if done well.

> Leather Skirt: I know this one is unexpected but trust me every doll needs a leather skirt in her closet.

> Gloves: I happen to be a big fan of the Phillosiphy that a lady never leaves the house without her gloves. They give you that added something. You'll find yourself walking with an extra bounce.

> High-waisted trouser and wideleg pant: A highwaist is a pinups best friend (especially if you're a hourglass figure like me). No matter what you wear with these you'll look great, this is stress-free dressing.

> Saddle shoes and creepers: I suggest two pairs one classic. But the second go loco get a color or print something that reflects you.

> Vintage Camisole: You can never have too many of these. These are what you'll be wearing with those Pencil skirts and trousers for example.

>Vintage Tees: This is up to you you know your style and what will go with your skirts and things.

> Sweater chain: These are worn with your cardigans and are a great way of adding your personality in a subtle way. Especially if at work, etc.

> Lingere: Foundation is the most important thing your clothing won't look good if the base is haphazard, and unstable. You need a Garter, shaper /girdle/ Corset, longline bra, Strapless Shaper, backless Shaper.

> Pillbox hat: It's a vintage staple and its one of the few hat styles that is flattering on all facial shapes.

> Vintage Suit: Its my opinion that the 1940's and the 1960's made some of the best suits and 2pc dress ensambles. Every Doll needs to save up and invest in at least one of each of these peices. The wardrobe possibilties are endlessand besides that they're amazing Collectors items.

> Swing jacket: these mod classics are a great staple to any wardrobe and are very stylish

I woke up like this: Look of the Day

>> Felt like being made up today for church so here is the result
***Birdcage veil (Brought from PUG years ago, but I altered it to what you see in the picture)
Also wearing oil of Olay Fresh effects BB cream in light to medium mixed with maybelline touch of light face glow
Lipstick is loreal infallble in crimson ***

No Matter How hard You Try... The Sun Tells All

Unlocking Nature's Secrets

This article is a  response to reader request if you'd like me to answer any questions , discuss a certain topic or etc... simply contact me on Facebook.

In our artificially obsessed world where everyone enjoys a quick fix; if you have any wisdom at all you know how fleeting and artificial those fixes are. You may look nice now but fast-forwards 10-15 years and (insert cheesy thriller music here ___). Yes it will be that scary. I've personally seen before and after results. Greatness never comes without work Dolls and Dukes!- and most importantly it's never achieved through shortcuts.
So I know what you're asking now; where are you going with this...Well its simple. I'm talking about something that's essential to every pinup girl, rockabilly queen, and greaser. A great palette. Or to say it plainer great skin. Look we all know this isn't just a look for us its a lifestyle therefore we're all conscious of how we present ourselves.
Great skin is one of the top ingredients on that list, if your skins not great nothing else is. (no matter how hard you try concealer doesn't hide but so much.) The sun tells all Dolls. So stick around I got some great tips, plus some D.I.Y.'s that are natural, won't break the bank and are guaranteed to have you looking great.

The Big not so Grand Reveal LoL

First and foremost great skin starts on the inside not on the out. Believe it or not but the state of your skin is actually a reflection of state of ones health. For example with good health the skin is bright , will have a youthful glow and clear.  All of the things we do want our skin to be.
However with bad health skin will generally appear dull, lifeless, prone to
breakouts and other stress related skin diseases. Now this isn't set in stone its a general statement you will find that these things will go both ways depending on the person. In the end it depends on the work you put in.
As I said you can't begin skincare with taking care of the body first, and water is one of the best things for that. if you're not already drinking it you should be drinking at least 8 glasses a day. Or more. If you're a person that suffers from dry skin, eczema (which i do), acne or anything like that; drinking an abundance of water will do wonders for. As well as detoxing. On the weekends take a lemon and squeeze it into a gallon of water. Then proceed to drink 2 gallons over the weekend, it will flush out your system from the inside out.
One thing you always learn starting from grade school is K.I.S.S. keep it simple stupid well the same goes for your skin. An Anti-aging should be incorporated into your rΓ©gime at all ages (if you expect to be a silver minx later, you need to have it together now), also complicated skin routines confuse the skin and often produce the opposite effect you'd been hoping for. God gave us everything we need to sustain ourselves found right within nature itself. The chemicals and byproducts that are put in our beauty products today are astounding, using natural products is both great for the environment but your pocket as well. You can find a subsequent replacement for each store brought product with essential oils, fruits, veggies and just about anything in your kitchen. You'll find yourself replacing a wealth of everyday items from moisturizers, to exfoliators, and even sunscreen. (if you have a allergy do not use the subsequent essential oil/ organic oil of the nut, fruit, etc..., replace the oil for something of your own preference.)

A good skincare regime should consist of an alternation between a gentle preferably creamy or soap cleanser and an exfoliant. I know you hear and read all the time about 'toners' but here's my opinion-you don't need them. A lot of times they actually do the reverse in what you think they're doing. D.I.Y. products are amazing and the best way to go. Its a great way to luxuriate; plus you'll be surprised how both cost efficient and what great gifts they make. So grab your paper and pen cause I'm sharing all of my favorite at home skincare recipes. Also I'm giving you,  your shopping list for all you're future at home skincare endeavors.

* I have and do use all recipes that I have shared. So no worries that I am just experimenting on you guys lol*

Post 15: The Vintage Muse Series Part 3: Bronze Does Red

I think it’s safe to say that if you’re a true Vintage Doll nothing gets your juices flowing like that perfect shade of red lipstick it’s not only the pistereistance to that perfect ensemble but when you find your perfect shade…there’s nothing in the world that makes you feel sexier. But on the other hand nothing can also be more complicated. The millions of brands, shades, tones the choices are endless and confusing, not to mention the countless number of beauty rules that we can never seem to keep up with. Are we a summer or winter, cool or warm? Do I tell this by my veins? Or skin tone? And if its skin tone how the hell am I supposed to determine that, I’m not a makeup artist? Then they’re the different undertones to consider for example brown-based reds, blue-based red, orange-based reds and so on. I mean let’s face it Dolls finding your perfect shade sometimes can feel like rocket science. However in my opinion like most things we its way more hard then in needs to be, so before we go on I must admit I am by no means an expert on makeup. In fact to be honest I’m not a big makeup wearer but, I never leave the house without my lipstick so I can tell you a thing or two on the subject. So first I’ll share tips I’ve picked up along the way that’ll help everyone. Then I’ll share some special tips for all my fellow special Bronze Goddesses out there.

There two ways to do this, we’ll begin the original. The easiest way to successfully hunt down that perfecto red is to find out your personal undertone.
The easy way but also potentially costly is to go to your local department store makeup counter and have your colors done, however you can easily do it yourself. Here are a few ways how.
